Man held in Rabbani killing

KABUL, Afghanistan, Sept. 25 (UPI) -- Afghan authorities said they were holding a man in the assassination of Burhanuddin Rabbani, who had led the country's effort to reach peace with the Taliban.

The man, alleged to be connected to the Taliban, was arrested Sunday in last week's death of the former Afghan president, who as head of the High Peace Council was trying to negotiate an end to the 10-year Afghan war.

The New York Times, which reported the arrest, said authorities did not give details about the suspect except that he was being detained "somewhere in Kabul in the past days" and questioned by intelligence agents.

The report said Afghan President Hamid Karzai and his government have come under much pressure both from the public and political opponents to capture those responsible for Rabbani's killing, which is seen as a major blow to the peace process.

Rabbani was killed at his home by a suicide bomber who had posed as a Taliban emissary carrying conciliatory messages, the report said. The killer had hidden the bomb in his turban.
