Officials in Kunar province in eastern Afghanistan said at least three civilians died and eight other people were injured when insurgents apparently misdirected mortar fire on a U.S. military facility.

The NATO force and Afghanistan's Interior Ministry condemned the attack, whose victims reportedly included women and at least one child.

Also Monday, NATO officials said they were investigating reports of civilian casualties during the weekend in Kunar province, the Times reported. Afghan officials said they think coalition forces were responsible for the death of a 12-year-old girl and the wounding of four other girls.

Separately, NATO apologized for the death of an 11-year-old girl during a night raid led by U.S. forces in Nangarhar province. On Saturday, another operation in Nangarhar province resulted in a 15-year-old boy being killed, touching off a protest in which another boy died, the Times said.
