Russian hiker killed, 2 hurt in rockslide

GORNO-ALTAISK, Russia, March 7 (UPI) -- A hiker was killed and two others seriously hurt by a rockslide in Siberia, officials said Monday.

Eight women were hiking in the mountains in the Altai Republic, which borders Mongolia, when the slide hit Sunday, the regional Emergencies Ministry told RIA Novosti.

The hikers were evacuated by a helicopter, which had to land in the village of Aktash for one woman with a severe concussion to get emergency first aid.

The injured women are in a hospital in Gorno-Altaisk. One was in a coma and the other was recovering after surgery.

The five others, along with body of the dead hiker, were to be flown out later Monday.
