Trial of alleged 'Night Stalker' begins

LONDON, March 3 (UPI) -- A London cabdriver went on trial Thursday, charged with robbing and sexually assaulting elderly victims between 1992 and 2009.

Prosecutors say Delroy Grant, 53, was the "Night Stalker," who targeted people in their 80s, The Guardian reported. Most of the victims were women, although Grant is also charged with sexually assaulting two elderly men.

The "Night Stalker" invaded homes in South London and southern suburban areas in Kent and Sussex. Grant, 53, a minicab driver, lives in Honor Oak in South London.

Jonathan Laidlaw, the prosecuting lawyer, in his opening statement in Woolwich Crown Court said Grant tended to assault victims who did not put up any fight. Those who did were left alone.

"What motivated Delroy Grant to carry out sexual offenses on the very elderly and what sort of gratification he could possibly have achieved is obviously difficult if not impossible to understand," Laidlaw said.

"Whether it was just the additional sexual element that he enjoyed or it was the power and control he could assert whilst committing these offenses, or it was the fear and anxiety which he created and reveled in, will probably remain unclear."
