Bomb kills guards at Kabul shopping center

KABUL, Afghanistan, Feb. 14 (UPI) -- A suicide bomber killed himself and two guards Monday at a shopping mall in Kabul, Afghanistan, police said.

The Kabul City Center's security manager, Haji Gul, told The New York Times that guards Gul Agha and Lal Mohammed fired on the terrorist when he set off the metal detector at the entrance.

He returned fire and then blew himself up. Two bystanders were wounded.

Because the bomb was detonated inside a vestibule for security screening, no one was hurt inside the mall or the adjoining Safi Landmark Hotel. The building was heavily damaged last year in an attack that killed at least 16 people.

"The security guards do their jobs at the Safi Landmark. They do their jobs really well; they really fought," said shopkeeper Abdul Raouf. "The police will not sacrifice themselves for you, but the security guards gave their lives."
