Merkel gets honorary degree in Tel Aviv

TEL AVIV, Israel, Feb. 1 (UPI) -- German Chancellor Angela Merkel, in Israel to get an honorary degree, told students Tuesday the country is missing a chance for peace.

Merkel had a session with students at Tel Aviv University, The Jerusalem Post reported.

"Europe will not turn its back on Israel or the United States," Merkel said. "We are worried because things were not moving. I'll tell you directly that you are currently missing the opportunity. History will not hand over many more."

She said both sides will need to make "painful concessions."

Merkel, who was given the honorary doctorate by Tel Aviv University, also met with President Shimon Peres at the presidential residence, Beit HaNassi, in Jerusalem. The two leaders discussed Iran, Egypt and the peace process between Israel and the Palestinians.
