Nigerian army barracks bombed

ABUJA, Nigeria, Dec. 31 (UPI) -- New Year's celebrants, many of them women and children, were killed and injured in a bomb blast in Abuja, Nigeria, Friday, authorities said.

The bomb went off near the Sani Abacha army barracks, known locally as mammy market, NEXT.com reported. The police headquarters in Abuja has been sealed off but it was unclear whether that was a result of the bombing, NEXT.com said.

Former Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar said the bombing is a reflection on President Goodluck Jonathan's lack of leadership but he condemned the action as "senseless and wicked."

NEXT.com did not give any casualty figures.
