Twenty-five parties are fielding candidates for at least some of the 200 seats in the Chamber of Deputies.

The campaign has been the longest and most expensive in Czech history with a total expenditure of 400 million koruny ($19 million). The two largest parties, the Social Democrats and Civic Democrats, spent most of the money.

Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek resigned in March 2009 after losing a vote of confidence that brought down the Civic Democratic government.
