Five life terms for Joe Cool killer

MIAMI, May 7 (UPI) -- A man convicted of killing four people on the Joe Cool charter boat in 2007 will spend the rest of his life in prison, a federal judge says.

U.S. District Judge Paul Huck sentenced Guillermo Zarabozo, 21, to five consecutive life prison terms plus 85 years in relation to the killings of four charter boat crew members from Miami Beach, Fla., The Miami Herald said Thursday.

Zarabozo, who was also ordered Wednesday to pay $789,210 in restitution for his crimes, has maintained his innocence regarding the killings that took place during the September 2007 hijacking of the Joe Cool charter boat.

''I'm really sorry for the loss of your family members,'' Zarabozo said. "But I had nothing to do with it."

Zarabozo insists Kirby Archer, 36, was the one who fatally shot Joe Cool boat Capt. Jake Branam; his wife, Kelley Branam; his half-brother, Scott Gamble, and crew mate Samuel Kairy. Archer has pleaded guilty to related charges, but also accused Zarabozo of being responsible for two of the killings.

The Herald said Zarabozo was convicted in February on 16 counts of murder, conspiracy, kidnapping, robbery and use of a firearm.
