Rock slide closes Alaskan tunnel

WHITTIER , Alaska, April 13 (UPI) -- No one was injured in a rock slide that closed Alaska's Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel with boulders stacked three-stories high, state officials said.

Saturday's slide will keep the tunnel on the Seward Highway near Whittier, Alaska, closed for several days, Rick Feller, a state transportation spokesman, told the Anchorage Daily News.

The hillside remained unstable, with rocks continuing to slide Sunday, the newspaper reported Monday.

People were stranded on either side of the tunnel, including Terri Telkamp, a parole officer from Barrow.

"I came from Barrow to get stuck in Whittier, where there's even less shopping," Telkamp said to the Daily News.
