E-mails show astronauts' relationships

ORLANDO, Fla., Dec. 14 (UPI) -- The language of romance between former astronaut Lisa Nowak and U.S. Navy Cmdr. Bill Oefelein was absent from their e-mails, newly released NASA documents show.

However, passion was evident between the commander and Air Force Capt. Colleen Shipman, whom Nowak viewed as a rival, the Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel reported Friday.

Nowak is accused of following Shipman to Florida and attacking her in an Orlando airport.

The subject matter of more than 200 pages of e-mails showed a professional tenor between Nowak and Oefelein -- covering subjects such as designs for shuttle apparel to staying fit and public-speaking events, the newspaper said.

But e-mails between Oefelein and Shipman is different, the newspaper reported. They were more playful and loving. In one, Shipman called Oefelein "cutie" and signed off "Love you." In another, Oefelein joked about overnight arrangements, saying that "due to noise requirements" they should stay in a hotel, not his parents' home.

Nowak is scheduled to stand trial in April. Her attorney has filed notice that he plans to use the insanity defense. She is charged with attempted kidnapping, burglary with assault and misdemeanor battery.
