Trouble strikes at LA Airport

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 13 (UPI) -- A recurring Customs and Border Protection computer glitch has caused more than 20,000 passengers to become stranded at the Los Angeles International Airport.

The glitch first occurred over the weekend, stranding 20,000 inbound international travelers and then re-occurred Sunday night, affecting about 1,700 inbound international passengers Monday, Los Angeles’s KNBC-TV reported.

The computer system is set up to identify people who are not allowed to fly and also helps officials identify people who are denied entry into the United States as security risks.

KNBC's Jinah Kim said many of the affected travelers were still trying to get on flights Monday, while Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said he has asked federal officials to ensure that a recurrence of the chaos does not happen.

Villaraigosa called the inconvenience experienced by passengers "unprecedented" and "troubling and unacceptable."
