Iran offers nuclear help to neighbors

TEHRAN, May 29 (UPI) -- There is nothing to stop Iran from helping its Persian Gulf neighbors develop nuclear power facilities, Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said.

Speaking a Tehran news conference, Mottaki said Iran was cooperating fully with the U.N.'s International Atomic Energy Agency and was free to help its neighbors.

"Iran, under the supervision of the IAEA can cooperate with the Persian Gulf countries in offering technology and is serious about it," Mottaki said.

His remarks came a week after the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council met in Saudi Arabia to discuss establishing nuclear programs, Iran's Fars news agency reported.

The group includes Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

Western countries are concerned Iran's uranium enrichment program could be used to arm nuclear weapons, while Tehran claims it is solely for producing electricity.
