Pitfalls of long-term care insurance

CONRAD, Mont., March 26 (UPI) -- A Montana woman who purchased long-term care insurance from an Indiana company hasn't received a penny after four years in a nursing home.

Mary Rose Derks has been given a myriad of reasons why her policy with Conseco won't cover her stay at the Beehive Homes, The New York Times reported.

According to data supplied by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, a disproportionate number of complaints have been lodged against Conseco, its affiliate, Bankers Life and Penn Treaty, the Times said.

"The bottom line is that insurance companies make money when they don't pay claims," Mary Beth Senkewicz, who resigned last year as a senior executive at the association, told the newspaper. "They'll do anything to avoid paying, because if they wait long enough, they know the policyholders will die."

In the case of Derks, Conseco initially denied her claim saying she waited too long to file it. Then, they said the Beehive Homes wasn't an approved facility even though it had a state license. The company concluded Derks wasn't sufficiently infirm.
