Zimbabwean opposition leader injured

HARARE, Zimbabwe, March 13 (UPI) -- Bearing sutured wounds on his head, Zimbabwe's opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai appeared in a Harare court Tuesday with other arrested activists.

About 100 other activists chanted and sang as they were paraded into the courtroom and many were wearing bandages, the BBC reported. His lawyer, Innocent Chagonda, said Tsvangirai had head injuries, bodily bruising and was limping after two days in police custody.

After the group made a brief appearance, prosecutors said those with injuries would be taken to a hospital for treatment.

Tsvangirai heads the Movement for Democratic Change, a vocal opponent to President Robert Mugabe.

He and the others were arrested Sunday at an opposition rally and alleged cases of police brutality were condemned by U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, the United States and European Union.

When police began moving in on demonstrators, rioting began and one demonstrator was killed by a police bullet. However, Zimbabwe's Information Minister Sikhanyiso Ndlovu told the BBC activists had attacked police.
