Nations prepare for N. Korea nuke talks

BEIJING, Jan. 22 (UPI) -- Top North Korean and South Korean negotiators were in Beijing to discuss plans to resume six-nation talks on North Korea's nuclear program.

North Korea's chief negotiator Kim Kye Gwan and top Korean negotiator Chun Yung Woo arrived Monday in Beijing.

Chun said he would meet with Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Wu Dawei on Tuesday morning. He said he would also meet with Kim, his North Korean counterpart, before his scheduled departure on Tuesday afternoon, Xinhua news reported.

U.S. chief negotiator Christopher Hill left Beijing Monday for Washington after a three-nation Asia tour. He said he expects talks to resume shortly.

"Our sense is everybody will be ready very soon." Hill told reporters, referring to North and South Korea, China, Japan, Russia and the United States.

North Korea wants the United States to drop financial sanctions that froze some North Korean assets in a Macau bank the Bush administration claims was involved in money laundering and counterfeiting, Chinese Radio International said.
