Midwest digs out as East cleans up

KANSAS CITY, Kan., Dec. 2 (UPI) -- Massive snow and ice storms knocked out power in the U.S. midsection while heavy winds and rains were blamed for at least one death in the East.

Missouri Gov. Matt Blunt activated the Missouri National Guard to help the state's residents recovering from late-week snowstorm. The governor also offered state facilities as shelters and generators to communities requesting assistance, The Kansas City Star said Saturday.

Around St. Louis, about 270,000 Ameren customers were without power after ice-laden trees fell on power lines during freezing rain. A company official said some customers may be without power at least four days, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch said.

A Millersburg, Pa., woman died Friday when wind ripped a tree from its roots, toppling it onto her car stopped at traffic light, the Harrisburg (Pa.) Patriot News said. The deadly gust was part of damaging winds that struck the upper Dauphin County area.

Ski bums in Wisconsin saw about a foot of snow in portions of the state, the Milwaukee Journal said.

Snow slowed an ambulance but not a delivery as Chicago paramedics delivered a baby boy Friday in the back of an ambulance outside an apartment building, the Chicago Tribune said Saturday.
