Gerald Ford undergoes angioplasty

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., Aug. 25 (UPI) -- Former U.S. President Gerald Ford has undergone an angioplasty at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota to open the blood flow in his coronary arteries.

It was the second coronary procedure performed on the 93-year-old former chief executive in less than a week.

Ford's aides said in a statement the former president underwent the angioplasty procedure Thursday, WZZM13 Grand Rapids (Mich.) reported.

Doctors also implanted stents -- small, sleeve-like frameworks -- to keep the arteries open.

The statement said the former president was "resting comfortably with his wife Betty and family."

Ford has been at the Mayo Clinic since Aug. 15, and surgeons implanted a pacemaker Monday.

The broadcast report quoted family friends as saying Ford has been dealing with a series of health problems this summer.

Ford represented Grand Rapids in the U.S. House before being picked by U.S. President Richard Nixon in 1973 to replace disgraced Vice President Spiro Agnew. When Nixon stepped down over Watergate, Ford became the 38th president in 1974, but was defeated by Jimmy Carter in 1976.
