Israeli warplanes buzzed the country home of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and launched airstrikes on Gaza in an effort to rescue kidnapped 19-year-old Israeli Army Cpl. Gilad Shalit, who CNN reports was kidnapped by groups linked with Syria.

Palestinian sources told CNN that Israeli troops also arrested Hamas Labor Minister Mohammad Barghouti in Ramallah. The Israeli army had no comment about the reported arrest.

Israeli television reported that al-Assad was at home when Israeli jets flew over his country home.

Syrian state television said Syria chased Israeli warplanes out of its airspace after what it called a "hostile and provocative act," but did not mention the reported over flight of al-Assad's home, CNN said.

Bridges linking North and South Gaza were destroyed early Wednesday after Palestinian militants attacked an Israeli outpost at a border crossing. Two soldiers and two militants were killed in the attack, and Shalit was captured, the BBC reported.
