New Orleans P.O. lifts magazine ban

NEW ORLEANS, April 29 (UPI) -- The New Orleans Post Office begins handling magazines and newspapers again Monday for the first time since Hurricane Katrina.

The New Orleans Processing and Distribution Center reopened Friday with a rededication ceremony. Postmaster General John Potter announced the end of the magazine embargo then, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reported.

The Postal Service also will begin sending packages through Louis Armstrong International Airport Monday, Potter said. They have been routed via Baton Rouge, slowing service.

David Lewin, a spokesman for the U.S. Postal Service, said most publishers suspended subscriptions in the New Orleans area, and customers should get in touch with them about resuming service.

Catalogs are still banned for another month while machinery to handle them is set up.
