U.S. Democrats ask for Iraq timetable

WASHINGTON, Nov. 14 (UPI) -- The Democratic Party leadership in the U.S. Senate Monday demanded the Bush administration lay out a plan to have U.S. troops withdraw from Iraq.

Democrats issued a release saying "2006 must be a year of significant transition in Iraq," that President Bush must tell the Iraqi people the U.S. military will not be in the country indefinitely, and the president must submit a "plan for success" to Congress.

The Bush administration has repeatedly said timetables such as those in the third Democratic point would enable insurgents to wait until the United States is out of Iraq to reassert themselves. Democrats have just as consistently demanded such a schedule.

"Our troops deserve a strategy in Iraq that is worthy of their sacrifice," said Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev. "That is why, for three years, Democrats have pushed the White House to lay out a plan for success. Unfortunately, the president has rejected our call, and instead, insisted America needs to 'stay the course.' With more than 2,050 Americans killed, more than $250 billion spent, and no end in sight after three years of war -- 'staying the course' is no longer an option."
