EU to offer nuclear carrot to Iran

BRUSSELS, July 28 (UPI) -- The European Union is ready to provide Iran with a steady supply of nuclear fuel for civil use if Tehran guarantees to freeze its nuclear enrichment program.

The EU plans to present incoming Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, with an offer to deliver nuclear fuel to power plants once the president-elect takes office next week, two EU officials told USA Today.

The new conservative president is expected to follow in the footsteps of his predecessor, Mohammad Khatami, who has stressed that Iran will resume some of its nuclear activities August 1 if Europe does not present a reasonable plan, the Tehran Times reported Thursday.

The EU's current policy is to offer the Iranian government carrots such as continual to-the-door delivery of nuclear fuel at market prices, deeper economic cooperation in aviation research and further inclusion in its regional security policy. In return, Brussels expects Tehran to use its nuclear power for peaceful purposes.
