State Rep. Tom Brinkman, the only other Republican who has thus far committed to running in the special election to replace Portman, was favored by 6 percent of the respondents.

Portman has been nominated to become the U.S. trade representative.

The other Republicans tested included former U.S. Rep. Bob McEwen who, at 10 percent, was DeWine's closest competition. He was followed by lawyer Bill Keating Jr. and former state Rep. Jean Schmidt at 7 percent, and Hamilton County Clerk of Courts Greg Hartmann at 3 percent.

Twenty-five percent of those polled by The Tarrance Group, which conducted the survey for the DeWine campaign, were undecided. The poll's margin of error is plus or minus 4.9 percentage points.
