Israel: Truce an optical illusion

WASHINGTON, March 8 (UPI) -- Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom said Tuesday the current truce with the Palestinians is an "optical illusion" that can blow up at any time.

Talking to reporters after a meeting with Condoleezza Rice at the State Department, Shalom said he told the U.S. secretary of state the Palestinians need to dismantle their terror outfits if they want the current peace process to succeed.

"The case-fire is not enough," said Shalom , referring to an accord Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas signed last month.

Abbas and Sharon declared a mutual end to hostilities when they met at the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh after more than four years of unrelenting violence since the Palestinian uprising broke out Sept. 28, 2000.
