U.S. consulate vehicle in Jeddah fired at

WASHINGTON, Aug. 30 (UPI) -- A gunman fired several shots at a vehicle belonging to the U.S. consulate in Jeddah Monday, the U.S. State Department said.

The shots were fired around 11 a.m. on a vehicle carrying a Marine security guard and a local driver. There were no injuries.

The vehicle was two blocks from the consulate, U.S. State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said.

"Local security was notified and have responded immediately," he said.

The consulate was closed to the public for the rest of the day as a precautionary measure, he said.

A State Department travel advisory warning for its citizens not to travel to Saudi Arabia still stands.
