Fox begins South American tour

MEXICO CITY, July 7 (UPI) -- Mexican President Vicente Fox is on a three-nation tour of South America, including a stop at the trade meeting of Mercosur, which Mexico wants to join.

Fox made his first stop Tuesday in Brazil where the Mexican president met with Brazil's President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to discuss bilateral trade, social development, and energy cooperation between the Mexican and Brazilian companies Pemex and Petrogas.

With Fox are his wife Marta Sahagún, Secretary of the Economy Fernando Canales, and Secretary of Agriculture Javier Usabiaga, as well as Sens. Erika Larregui of the Ecological Green Party, and Carlos Flores Rico of the PRI.

In Iguazu, Argentina Wednedday Fox presented his official petition for membership to Mercosur at the conference being held there. While there, he will also hold private meetings with President Ricardo Lagos of Chile and President Hugo Chávez of Venezuela, as well as the president of the Mercosur council, Eduardo Duhalde.

Fox is scheduled to arrive in Asunción, Paraguay, Thursday night, where he will meet with President Nicanor Duarte. Friday Fox will accept the keys to the city of Asunción, attend a session of Congress, and meet with the Mexican community, before returning to Mexico City Friday night.
