U.N. to name Iraq rep within a week

UNITED NATIONS, June 25 (UPI) -- U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan Friday said he planned to name a new special representative to Iraq within a week.

The last such envoy, Sergio Vieira de Mello, was among the 22 people killed in a terrorist truck bombing of U.N. headquarters in Baghdad last August. The world organization eventually withdrew international personnel and based operations in Amman, Jordan.

The secretary-general told reporters at U.N. World Headquarters in New York the United Nations has continued its work on behalf of the Iraqi people, including by helping to set up the transitional administration and in preparing for elections.

"We are doing whatever we can from Amman and, where necessary, we do cross-border trips," Annan said. The aim is to find creative ways to assist the Iraqi people without exposing U.N. personnel to undue risk.
