Rice to meet Palestinian leader

WASHINGTON, May 7 (UPI) -- U.S. national security adviser Condoleezza Rice will meet Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia in Germany this month, the State Department said Friday.

The meeting is part of the Bush administration's efforts to revive the Middle East peace talks and improve its image in the region damaged by the Iraqi prison scandal.

Rice will meet the Palestinian leader May 17 in Berlin, State Department spokesman Richard Boucher told a briefing in Washington.

"We're working to advance the Middle East peace process through all the meetings" President Bush, Secretary of State Colin Powell, Rice and other senior U.S. officials have been holding, he said.

Powell travels to Jordan next week to attend a regional economic forum.

U.S. officials say Rice will discuss Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's proposals for settling the Palestinian-Israeli dispute when she meets Qureia.

Boucher said more meetings between senior U.S. and Arab leaders are also planned.
