Fireworks lit the sky in several cities as people burst crackers and danced in the streets to loud music to celebrate the victory.

Delirious fans danced outside the homes of players in several cities. The celebrations started nearly an hour before India scalped the last wicket.

Pakistan never looked comfortable after its shaky start to chase India's 294 runs target.

Indian President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam said in a message to the victorious team: "The matches have brought smiles to everyone in India. You have not only won the series but also have won the hearts of the peoples of our subcontinent."

This is India's first cricket tour of Pakistan in 15 years. The team will play three Tests matches, the five-day version of the game beginning March 28.
