Formal murder charges in Swedish stabbing

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Jan. 12 (UPI) -- The Yugoslav man who confessed to stabbing Swedish Foreign Minister Anna Lindh has been formally charged with murder, the Telegraph said Monday.

Mijailo Mijailovic, a 25-year-old Swede of Yugoslav origin, confessed to stabbing Lindh, 46, in September last year, but his lawyer insisted it was not a politically motivated act.

Mijailovic has been in jail for more than three months after being detained six days after the attack. It is not clear when the trial will start since he is expcted to undergo extensive psychiatric tests.

Lindh, 46, a leading polititian and pro-euro champion, was stabbed in the chest while out on a shopping trip to a Stockholm department store near the parliament buildings.

Lindh, who was married with two children, succumbed to her injuries several hours after the attack.
