Britain to announce military overhaul

LONDON, Dec. 10 (UPI) -- The threat of international terrorism has prompted an overhaul of Britain's military organization, the BBC reported Wednesday.

Defense Minister Geoff Hoon planned to unveil a major reorganization of his nation's armed forces Thursday, including fewer warships, aircraft and heavy armor.

Britain's top military officer, Chief of the Defense Staff Sir Michael Walker, said the government's plans have the backing of military's leaders and are not being driven by politicians and accountants.

Walker said the changes are being driven by the need for a more flexible and agile armed force to counter the spread of weapons of mass destruction and to tackle international terrorism.

However, conservative defense spokesman Keith Simpson has warned against cutting troop numbers.

"With the army already under strength, and committed from Northern Ireland to Iraq and relying heavily on reservists, it would be highly irresponsible to cut the strength of the Armed Forces further," he said.
