Ford stands by Warren Commission report

DALLAS, Nov. 22 (UPI) -- The only surviving member of the Warren Commission stands by the panel's conclusion that Lee Harvey Oswald alone killed President John F. Kennedy.

Former President Gerald R. Ford told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram he's open to the possibility new evidence might show there was a conspiracy, but after 40 years, he hasn't seen any.

Ford became president in 1974 with the resignation of Richard Nixon and survived two assassination attempts in September 1975.

The 90-year-old former president said the commission expected its findings to be viewed with skepticism.

A 2001 Gallup poll stated eight in 10 Americans believed Oswald had help, the Star-Telegram said.

"I think all of us on the commission realized there would be questions raised," he told the newspaper. "After all, there are people today who are still speculating about the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.

"Assassinations lead to doubt, regardless of what the conclusion might be."
