Suicide bomber injures woman near Grozny

GROZNY, Russia, July 27 (UPI) -- A female suicide bomber detonated herself near a security base Sunday, wounding a nearby woman.

Russian and Chechen officials said the attack happened in Tsatsan-Yurt, near the headquarters of a special security unit attached to Akhmad Kadyrov, Voice of America reported.

Kadyrov is head of the Chechen regional administration backed by Moscow and is expected to run in Chechnya's presidential elections Oct. 5.

Officials told VOA that guards at the security base were suspicious when the young woman approached them and they fired warning shots in the air to try and scare her away.

The suicide bomber then detonated her explosives.

Last May, another female suicide bomber blew herself up at a crowded festival, killing at least 14 people. Officials said it was a botched attempt to assassinate Kadyrov.

Female suicide bombers have become common in Chechnya this year, where fighting continues over the positioning of Russian troops.
