Bishop arrested for fatal hit-and-run

PHOENIX, June 16 (UPI) -- Catholic Bishop Thomas O'Brien of Phoenix was charged Monday in a fatal weekend hit-and-run car accident involving a pedestrian.

The Arizona Republic said O'Brien was arrested after more than four hours of questioning by Phoenix police traffic investigators. He faces one felony count of leaving the scene of a fatal accident. Following his arrest he was taken to a Phoenix hospital for treatment of high blood pressure.

O'Brien is accused of hitting and killing 43-year-old Jim Reed as the man was jaywalking about 8:35 p.m. Saturday.

A Phoenix police spokeswoman said two cars struck Reed, the first identified as a car later traced to O'Brien. The drivers of both cars fled.

Detectives said O'Brien was cooperating with the fatality investigation. The driver of the second car remained unidentified.
