Dec. 19 (UPI) -- Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been appointed as Manchester United's caretaker manager until the end of the season.

The Red Devils confirmed the move on Wednesday, a day after the firing of Jose Mourinho. Manchester United sits in sixth place in the Premier League, eight points behind fifth-place Arsenal.

"Manchester United announced today that former striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been appointed as caretaker manager until the end of the 2018/19 season," United said in a statement.

Solskjaer scored 126 goals in 366 games for United between 1996 and 2007. He was the club's reserve-team manager in 2008 until he took the managerial role at FC Molde in Norway.

"Solskjaer will take charge of the first team with immediate effect and will remain in place while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new full-time manager," the club added. "He will be joined by Mike Phelan as first-team coach, working alongside Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna."

The Red Devils' first test under Solskjaer comes against Cardiff City at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday at Cardiff City Stadium in Cardiff, Wales.

"Manchester United is in my heart and it's brilliant to be coming back in this role. I'm really looking forward to working with the very talented squad we have, the staff and everyone at the club," Solskjaer said.
