Manchester United fires manager Jose Mourinho

Dec. 18 (UPI) -- Jose Mourinho's tenure at Manchester United is officially over.

The Premier League club announced that Mourinho "left the club" on Tuesday. Sources told ESPN and Sky Sports that the veteran coach was informed of the decision on Tuesday morning while at the club's training ground.

"Manchester United has announced that Jose Mourinho has left the Club," the Red Devils said in a statement.

"We would like to thank him for his work during his time at Manchester United and wish him success in the future."

Mourinho, 55, took over at United in 2016. He previously coached at Benfica, Uniao de Leiria, Porto, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and had two stints at Chelsea.

Liverpool beat United 3-1 on Sunday. Valencia beat the Red Devils 2-1 in the Champions League group stage on Wednesday. The Red Devils haven one Premier League win since Nov. 3. They resume Champions League play against Paris Saint-Germain on Feb. 12.

United battles Cardiff City at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday at Cardiff City Stadium in Cardiff, Wales.
