Roddick powers way into Artois quarters

LONDON, June 14 (UPI) -- Andy Roddick Thursday powered his way into the quarterfinals of the $900,000 Artois Championships grass-court tennis tournament in London.

Roddick, a three-time winner of the event and seeded second this week, used 22 aces to defeat Alex Bogdanovic, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4. Roddick was tied at 5-5 in the second-set tiebreaker when he asked for an instant replay challenge. He won and closed the set on the next point.

Top-seeded Rafael Nadal was ahead of Max Mirnyi, 7-6 (7-3), 5-3, when rain caused the suspension of their third-round match until Friday. Rain also postponed the match between No. 4 Novak Djokovic and 14th-seeded Arnaud Clement and the battle between No. 5 Ivan Ljubicic and Nicolas Mahut was stopped by rain with Ljubicic up 4-3 in the first set.

No. 3-seeded Fernando Gonzalez stopped No. 15 Robby Ginepri, 6-2, 7-5, and Ivo Karlovic upset eight-seeded Marat Safin, 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-4), on Thursday.

Also, No. 7 Dmitry Tursunov outlasted 12th-seeded Paul- Henri Mathieu, 7-6 (7-3), 3-6, 6-3. and Marin Cilic eliminated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

The tournament quarterfinals are set for Friday after the completion of the third-round matches.
