Robredo a second-round victim at Hamburg

HAMBURG, Germany, May 15 (UPI) -- Defending champion Tommy Robredo dropped a three-set, second-round match Tuesday at the clay-court Masters Series tennis tournament in Germany.

Robredo, seeded sixth in this year's event, won the first set but was handled easily from there by clay-court specialist Nicolas Almagro 6-7 (1-7), 6-2, 6-4.

Ninth-seeded Andy Murray is also out of the Hamburg Masters, withdrawing because of a right wrist injury. He was leading Filippo Volandri 5-1 when he couldn't continue.

In second-round play Tuesday, seventh-seeded Ivan Ljubicic rallied for a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 win over Florent Serra and 12th-seeded David Ferrer also needed three sets to defeat David Robin Soderling.

In first-round play, local favorite Florian Mayer was a 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (7-5) winner over 13th-seeded Mikhail Youzhny; Julien Benneteau defeated Rainer Schuettler 7-6 (7-2), 6-2); and Carlos Moya had little trouble in a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Mardy Fish.

Other first-round winners were Jarkko Nieminen, Jose Acasuso, Jurgen Melzer and Oscar Hernandez.

Top seeds Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal open their tournament play with second-round matches Wednesday.
