Buffalo 4, Detroit 2

DETROIT, Oct. 3 (UPI) -- Ryan Miller's homecoming was a happy one Thursday night as the Buffalo Sabres pulled away for a 4-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings.

Miller played collegiately at Michigan State, where he won the Hobey Baker Award in 2001. With his parents in attendance, the 22-year-old East Lansing native stopped 14 of 15 shots in the third period, denying Brett Hull from point-blank range and getting his glove on Sergei Fedorov's shot off a three on one.

Offseason acquisitions Adam Mair and Jochen Hecht scored in the final eight minutes for the Sabres, who handed the defending Stanley Cup champions just their second loss in eight preseason games.

J.P. Dumont and Miroslav Satan had the other goals for Buffalo, which was without defenseman Jay McKee and injured winger Maxim Afinogenov.

Jason Williams and Hull tallied for the Red Wings, who rested two-time Norris Trophy winner Nicklas Lidstrom and 41-year-old Igor Larionov.
