LOS ANGELES, Sept. 29 (UPI) -- Nick Jonas says songwriting helped him cope with his split from Olivia Cupo.

The 24-year-old singer revealed in the October issue of Los Angeles Confidential that he channeled his "heartbreak" over the Miss USA 2012 winner into his music.

"Heartbreak is a theme that a lot of people relate to -- the challenges of the next steps in your life, and when some doors close, and how you approach the next ones opening," Jonas said. "I saw pretty quickly that it was a lot of what my fans could relate to."

"It's nerve-wracking when [the feelings] are as personal as the ones that I shared were," he admitted. "But I feel relieved when I use my writing as a way to process -- it's very therapeutic."

Jonas and Culpo called it quits in June 2015 after two years of dating. The singer later told Entertainment Weekly the split inspired the song "Champagne Problems" on his album Last Year Was Complicated.

"[It's] one of the most personal songs of the record," he said. "It's funny. It sounds like a party jam, but in reality, it's about something pretty sad."

"We had this bottle of champagne that we were saving for our anniversary," the star explained. "[When we broke up] we decided that we were going to celebrate the years we had together and the time that we spent together by sharing this bottle of champagne and closing that chapter of our life."

Jonas has since been linked to actresses Kate Hudson and Lily Collins, but told L.A. Confidential it's been too "challenging" to find any real time to date. The singer said he's making the choice to be single in order to focus on his career.
