AUSTIN, Texas, March 4 (UPI) -- Avril Lavigne shocked fans last week when the singer screamed and fled the stage in the middle of her performance. The incident takes place at 3:55 in the video below.

The 29-year-old singer became so startled during her concert in China that she yelped and ran backstage during her rendition of "I'm With You." Some believe the source of the scare may have been a fan attempting to climb on stage. A fan has previously grabbed Lavigne after rushing the stage during a 2011 concert in Brazil.

Lavigne was in China as part of an Asian tour to promote her new album. The self-titled album is the singer's fifth studio release. Sony released Avril Lavigne on November 1 of last year. It is said to depart from Lavigne's previous productions, and features a duet between the singer and her husband, Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger.
