Kerry breaks Dean's fundraising record

WASHINGTON, March 3 (UPI) -- Sen. John Kerry Wednesday broke Howard Dean's record for Internet fundraising in a single day, raising $1.2 million in 24 hours.

Starting Tuesday night and through Wednesday, the Kerry campaign raised $1.2 million in 24 hours following Kerry's triumphant sweep of nine out of 10 Super Tuesday primary and caucus contests across the nation.

The $1.2 million figure beat the previous record of $800,000 in 24 hours set by former Vermont governor Howard Dean during his campaign. In the 2000 Republican primary race, Sen. John McCain of Arizona once raised $1.2 million during a 48 hour period.

"We're thrilled that people who want to change America are lining up to support John Kerry," said campaign spokesman Chad Clanton. "These impressive Internet fundraising numbers are just another sign that Democrats are more united than ever to defeat George Bush."
