Marcos grandson born in secrecy

MANILA, Philippines -- President Ferdinand Marcos' eldest daughter, whose marriage to a divorced basketball coach outraged her parents, gave birth to a son in Hawaii, her father-in-law said Sunday.

'We got a call from our son this afternoon and he said she had a boy,' said Ricardo Manotoc, father of Imee Marcos' husband, Tomas 'Tommy' Manotoc.

He said Mrs. Manotoc, 27, bore the child in Honolulu.

The infant, whose name was not disclosed, is the first grandchild of the Philippine president and first lady Imelda Marcos, who have two other children.

A small, page-one story in Sunday's Chinese News newspaper was the first public acknowledgement of the birth, which has been the talk of Manila coffee shops for several weeks. The elder Manotoc later confirmed the report.

The Chinese-language newspaper is reportedly owned by members of the Marcos family.

Mrs. Manotoc, a Princeton University graduate who outraged her parents with her 1981 marriage in Arlington, Va., gave birth by caesarian section three weeks ago, the newspaper quoted 'reliable sources' as saying.

She was reported resting under a doctor's supervision before returning to the Philippines. Both mother and baby were reported in good condition.

The couple's marriage is not recognized in the Philippines, where divorce is illegal.

Manotoc obtained a Dominican Republic divorce from former beauty queen Aurora Pijuan about a month before he married Miss Marcos. He and his new wife are reportedly building a home in the exclusive Manila suburb of Wack Wack.

Manotoc, four-time Philippine amateur golf champion, coaches a Manila-based professional basketball team. He has family ties to two U.S.-based political foes of Marcos.

The former Miss Marcos is chairman of the 10-million member National Youth Corps and director general of the Experimental Cinema of the Philippines.

Manotoc's mother said her son was still trying to get his first marriage annulled by the Roman Catholic Church. He has two children by his first wife.

Manotoc was kidnapped in the Philippines shortly after his wedding to the president's daughter and reportedly rescued 42 days later by government agents.

The government said he had been abducted by the Communist New People's Army, which denied the allegation. Manotoc's family said they believed their new in-laws were somehow linked to his disappearance.
