China appoints special Mideast peace envoy

BEIRUT, Lebanon, Oct. 23 (UPI) -- China has appointed a special envoy to the Middle East peace process to help find a solution to the Arab-Israeli conflict, its ambassador in Lebanon Liu Xianghua said Wednesday.

Xianghua said the appointment came in response to requests by several Arab countries. She said the special envoy will visit Israel and five Arab countries, including Lebanon, Egypt, Jordan, Syria and the Palestinian territories. He was expected to arrive in Beirut on Nov. 14.

Xianghua said the Chinese envoy will have no specific proposals but was to consult and exchange points of view with concerned leaders in the Middle East.

She said China was ready to play a more effective and positive role to help find a settlement to the Arab-Israeli conflict.
