Desmond Tutu returns to South Africa hospital with infection

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, Sept. 17 (UPI) -- Archbishop Desmond Tutu was admitted to a hospital in South Africa after a recent surgical site began showing signs of infection, his family said.

Tutu recently had surgery in an attempt to treat a recurring infection, and was released from the hospital Wednesday after a three-week stay.

His wife Leah said Saturday the surgical wound was infected and would require further treatment.

Tutu, 84, has been plagued with health problems in recent years, including a recurring infection in 2013 and an ongoing battle with prostate cancer, which was first diagnosed in 1997.

The first archbishop of Cape Town, Tutu campaigned for peace and was awarded the 1984 Nobel Peace Prize for his work to end apartheid.
