Police: Gunman kills wife, four others in Serbian cafe

ZITISTE, Serbia, July 2 (UPI) -- A gunman shot dead five people, including his estranged wife, and injured 22 in a cafe in Serbia, police said Saturday.

The man entered the cafe in the town about 50 miles north of Belgrade and used an automatic rifle, police said. He was captured by police while fleeing.

Two people died instantly and three others died while being transported to a hospital in nearby Zrenjanin.

Gordana Kozlovacki, the director of the hospital in Zrenjanin, said 22 people were treated after the shooting. Seven remained in a serious condition.

The interior minister, Nebojša Stefanović told Belgrade's B92 TV, that jealousy could be a motive.

"We are all shocked that something like this could happen, since this was a very quiet man who had no police record," he said.

The suspect, in his 30 and only identified as ZS, was arguing with his wife in the cafe, left and then came back with the gun, Serbian TV said.

One day earlier, the interior ministry offered an amnesty to encourage owners of illegal weapons to surrender or register them.

Three years ago, 13 people were shot dead in a village near Belgrade and last year six died in a dispute over a wedding in northern Serbia.
