MAFA, Nigeria, March 3 (UPI) -- An investigation has begun of an attack by suspected Boko Haram insurgents who killed scores of people and burned buildings in Mafa, Nigeria, authorities said.

Members of the pro-Islam, anti-Western organization invaded the town in northeastern Nigeria Sunday night, overpowering security guards and terrorizing the residents. The attack came a day after a similar incident in the village of Mainok killed more than 40 residents, the Nigerian newspaper Vanguard reported Monday.

More than 200 people have been killed in the past week by Boko Haram attacks in Borno state, including those in Mafa and Mainok, the newspaper said.
