Dencinger was born in Cepin, Croatia, but was an ethnic German.

A man with the same name joined the Waffen SS elite Nazi unit at the age of 18 and served as a guard in at least five concentration camps during World War II, Jutarnji said.

The news agency said Dencinger had moved to the United States in 1956 and was a businessman in the Akron, Ohio, area, becoming a citizen in 1972. His citizenship was revoked and he left the country in 1989, Jutarnji said.
