CAIRO, Jan. 7 (UPI) -- Pro-military Egyptians called for Qatar's ambassador to Egypt to be expelled Tuesday over alleged interference by the Persian Gulf state in Egypt's affairs.
In a demonstration outside the Qatari embassy in Cairo, scores of protesters held pictures of Defense Minister Abdul Fatah al-Sissi, who helped oust former President Mohamed Morsi whom Qatar had backed, Gulf News reported.
Egypt has accused Qatar of favoring the Muslim Brotherhood, of which Morsi is a member. Qatar has reportedly granted political asylum to nearly 600 Islamists sought by Egypt on charges of inciting violence.
Badr Abdul Atti, a Foreign Ministry spokesman, said the Egyptian ambassador in Qatar had not yet confirmed the reports.
Qatar has criticized a decision by Egyptian authorities to declare the Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist organization, while Cairo has protested Doha's condemnation of a security crackdown on Morsi supporters.
