CAIRO, Oct. 10 (UPI) -- The U.S. decision to halt deliveries of arms and financial aid to Egypt is "wrong in terms of content and time," the country's foreign ministry said Thursday.
The response came a day after the United States said it would suspend shipments of major weaponry and $260 million in cash to the Egyptian military over the internal violence stemming from the July ouster of President Mohamed Morsi.
In a statement, Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman Badr Abdel Atty said, "The decision was wrong in terms of terms of content and time," Ahram Online reported.
"It raises serious questions about U.S. readiness to provide stable strategic support to Egyptian security programs amid threats and terrorism challenges it has been facing," the spokesman said.
While Egypt wants to maintain good relations with the United States, Abdel Atty said the country "will take domestic decisions independently and without external influences."
In announcing the decision, Washington said it would continue aid directed at countering terrorism and securing Egypt's borders, as well as programs for health, education and private development.
